Franco Prussian War of 1871

Post autor: jgstock56 »

Dear Group

I suspect my GG Grandfather was conscripted into the Prussian Army in 1870/1871 and likely served near Alsace Lorraine France. I know he was living near Gartschin, Berent, West Prussia (today Garczyn, Poland). My questions is.... if he was conscripted from Gartschin, could I determine which Regiment he served in?

Background... all Prussian Army records from the Franco Prussian War were lost in World War II. Some sacramental records exist from that era however I would need to know which Regiment of the Prussian Army he served in. His name was Johan Semrau baptized in 1849 in Lippusch, Berent, West Prussia. He was Polish Catholic.

Any help appreciated

Hi!
Garczyno (Gartschin) is in Kashubia, near Kościerzyna.
You have to look among the units of the Prussian I Army Corps, because it existed in 1870. The 17th West Prussian Army Corps, fighting at Tannenberg in 1914, was established only in 1890. You need to find the regiment closest to Kościerzyna, but also remember not only about the infantry, but also about the artillery, cavalry and engineering troops (pioneers).
